Trompe L'Oeil Ornament

For this project I used foam, clay, and found objects to replicate an ornamental shape found in a textbook. After I created the ornament in 3D, I then replicated it on muslin with scenic paints to create a golden version of the ornament.

Step 1

Using a variety of materials, as well as carving into the foam, I recreated the rosette shape in 3D.

Step 2

Next, Jaxsan was used to cover the whole piece and give it the illusion of stone. Scenic paints were used to age it and enhance shadows.

Step 3

I drew the ornament with charcoal to create a pounce and think through the placement of the highlights and shadows.

Step 4

Onto a brown based muslin canvas, I first drew the outline and painted the shadows.

Step 5

Highlights added.

Final Product

Bright golden hot highlights were added, as well as orange bounced light, creating a golden effect.
